Wet Coast Day

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Recent comments by visitors to this site led me to go off on a tangent and read about their NZ trips.
I can’t resist reliving riding over Haast Pass or conquering the hills between Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. And today brings back even more memories of those particular areas in general.
It is pouring [...]

Getting the bikes to the starting line

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

We haven’t figured out how to get our bicycles to the Pacific and that isn’t because we haven’t been trying. We can’t take them on the plane because our first flight is on a puddle jumper. Besides, it would cost $75 to take the bikes even if that was our only luggage. It’s [...]

Four sets of Oregon maps

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Several weeks ago, no, maybe a month ago, I requested the Oregon bicycling maps from their website. (http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/BIKEPED/maps.shtml). I waited a few weeks and called them to see if they had received my email request. They assured me that they had and that the maps were on their way. I waited [...]

Sunday in Merida

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Sunday in Round Lake isn’t quite like Sunday in Merida, but we did have a fund raiser today. The organizers thought that we were in Mexico because they had everything outside. There is no heat in the auditorium, which is where this event was held. Now, if this were Sunday in Merida,
we [...]

overwhelming response

First, this is a temporary site and not totally functional. There are some inherent dangers of fooling with Wordpress when coding skills are minimal. This site will have to do until we can figure out what the problem is with the other, which seems to only use a white font for posts. [...]

Warm Showers

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

I recently updated my listing on the Warm Showers List (WSL- www.warmshowers.org).  Although I had been a host for years, I forgot to change my information when I moved.  We only once had somebody contact us about staying with us.  It never happened as the cyclist’s route changed.
The concept is a good one.  Hosts, mostly [...]

it’s all in your head

Monday, October 16th, 2006

I did a short ride today and had a tough time.  What am I doing thinking of doing a transcontinental trip?  No way can I do it.  I can’t climb the hills.  I will be riding four mph.  Well, I did do New Zealand a few times.  I did Baja, which had some really steep grades, [...]

north or west

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

We have to stop in Toledo and spend some time hitting some good Mexican restaurants, something that is difficult to do in Albany.  Chilaquiles for breakfast, enchiladas for lunch and chiles rellenos for dinner.  So, I haven’t ever seen chilaquiles on a menu in Toledo, but I can dream.
Cycling to Sandusky poses a few problems.  [...]

back to toledo

Planning the route across unfamiliar territory requires lots of back and forth between maps, journals and websites. Although exciting in its own way, it is definitely more comfortable planning the route through familiar territory. Even if the roads are ones that we have not ridden, they seem so much less foreign than roads through towns [...]
