Cross training
That counter sure creates a bit of discomfort when I see that it is already in the low 30′s. I swear that it was just over a 100 a few days ago, but consulting a calendar confirms that since April starts in a few days that May 1 will be here in a too short amount of time.
So much for that 12-weeks of training before a tour. Anybody know a down and dirty training program that can make up for the missed weeks?
The continuous work on renovating the house – every single day since December 21 – became intense and we really needed a break. We could have taken some time off to train, but like rational people, we took off for St. Croix to visit my sister. We haven’t relaxed too much, but not holding a paint brush and soaking in the salt air, has greatly reduced the callouses and dryness of my hands.
We need to count the last two days of hiking toward our training because we don’t have anything else that faintly resembles exercise that we have attempted in the past several months. So, walking to Isaacs Bay and then to the tidal pools has to count for something. It made me realize that I definitely could not bike up any of the hills that we hiked.
Driving the scenic road gave me a taste of what the terrain out of Astoria might be like. I mentally calculated how long and hard it will be to push the bicycle up such hills and wondered if the down hills would compensate for the lost time.
Ever heard of anybody touring 1.5 miles per day? That could be me.
Then again, we aren’t cycling great distances the first day. We know from past experience that much of this is mental. We can always add another day. We will be getting on the road at first light to ensure that we can cover 30 miles by dark.
