Hardly Abandoned
You’ve read those statistics about abandoned blogs. This one might look like it was abandoned because of the lack of posts for an extended period of time, but that is definitely not the case. I mentioned before that we are renovating a house and we are getting close to the finish line. I would definitely classify this project as an endurance race rather than a sprint. We spend 12-14 hours per day working and usually by the time we get home I am both physically exhausted and brain dead. So, that’s my excuse for not regularly posting in the past few weeks.
The disappointing news is that the nice bicycle that we bought from a fellow Phred is too big for Robert. Although it is a 23″ frame, it is a different 23″ from than the 23″ frame that he has. Make sense? Fortunately, we have a buyer for the bicycle. She will have a very nice machine for her summer tour. As for us, we can always survive with the bicycles that we have, but something newer and specifically for touring would be a real bonus.
I spent months on a sport touring bicycle traveling around New Zealand. The bicycle worked ok and I survived even though it probably wasn’t the best bicycle for touring. But, sometimes the best bike for touring is the one that you have. It is kind of like that saying about having kids. If you ever waited for an ideal time or for a time when you could afford it, you would never have them. Both of our bicycles have thousands of miles of great experiences on them and can likely have thousands more miles of excitement left in them.
I noticed on the counter on the home page, which I haven’t looked at recently, that we have fewer than 60 days left until the start of our tour. The training program isn’t coming along too well unless we can count spackling or painting as aerobic exercise.
It is possible to ride across the country at a rate of ten miles per day and some days it seems that we may be doing it that way. We certainly do have all day to get to our destination and right now, it sure seems that it might take us all day to go 30 or so miles. Next week, when the house is finished, I will consider setting up the trainer. May 1 looms large.
