We have to stop in Toledo and spend some time hitting some good Mexican restaurants, something that is difficult to do in Albany. Chilaquiles for breakfast, enchiladas for lunch and chiles rellenos for dinner. So, I haven’t ever seen chilaquiles on a menu in Toledo, but I can dream.
Cycling to Sandusky poses a few problems. One big one is the Rte. 2 bridge across Sandusky Bay. That route is much shorter. We can get to Port Clinton on a familiar bicycle friendly route. But, getting to Sandusky is a problem using that route. I read a book on cycling around Lake Erie once that suggested riding out Route 2. The death highway. Perfect for cycling - not. Trucks use it as the free alternate to the turnpike. Much of it is still a 2-lane highway that carries lots of traffic to Cedar Point in the summer. That is the quickest most direct way, but there are lots of nice and pleasant roads through Ottawa county. But, that won’t get us to Sandusky. Going that way, we would have to take a ferry to get to one of the islands, get another ferry to Sandusky and then take the ferry to Pelee Island. All the ferries charge extra for bikes, so just those charges for two bikes add up to a night at a cheap motel. Adding in the ferry fees adds up quickly as well.
The other option is to cycle around Sandusky Bay. That takes a bit longer. The real downside of going to Sandusky is that the ferry leaves in the evening. That is fine for giving us time to make it to Sandusky, but then we will arrive on Pelee rather late in the day.
Looks like plan B - getting a ride to Detroit- is the way to go.
Getting from Detroit to Windsor via bicycle also poses a problem. The best option is to get a ride across the bridge or through the tunnel to Windsor. Maybe we can convince somebody to sag us for awhile or go to Pelee Island with us. Right, Erik?
